Pelican Point

Pelican Point is a personal project created in 2018. It was primarily a lighting exercise, using the same scene to create several distinct moods utilizing unique lighting and compositing. All assets created using Maya and Photoshop, rendered in Arnold, and compositing in Nuke with final editing in After Effects. The inspiration for this piece is “Tiny House 2” by Random Cushing. You can see more of his work at http://randomswebsite.com .

Wireframe / Displacement
Geometry for many of the complex elements, such as the rocks and ocean, was done entirely with displacement maps. This reduced render time and eased animating the ocean without a time intensive simulation.

Compositing Breakdown
The final look of each mood was finalized through Nuke compositing. This includes the addition of moving footage to break up the largely static nature of the piece. To the right is a breakdown of one scene composite. The other shots followed a similar process.
